Munich is one of the top cities in Germany. It is the capital and the largest city of the state of Bavaria. Munich was host of the 1972 Summer Olympics. The city’s name is derived from the monks of Benedictine order who laid the foundation of this city. Munich today is the financial and publishing hub of Germany and is one of the top ranked destinations for migration. There are plenty of tourist attractions and car rental is essential to see as many as possible during your stay.
The city dates back to the 12th century. Life in Munich became very difficult during World War I as the Allied forces blocked food and fuel supplies. It became a Nazi stronghold in 1933. The first concentration camp was established in Dachau, 10 miles north of the city. It was heavily damaged during the World War II. It was the base of White Rose, a student resistance movement from June 1942 to February 1943. Munich was completely rebuilt post war and residents now enjoy a high quality of life but some of the wartime monuments are still in evidence.
It lies on the elevated plains of Upper Bavaria and has a continental climate which is affected by the proximity to the Alps. The city has got historic buildings and impressive architecture. Munich not only reconstructed the ruins of its historic buildings but also new landmarks in architecture. The Marienplatz is at the centre of the city. It is a large open square named after Mariensaule and has a Marian Column at its centre. It houses both the Old and the New Town Hall. Tourists come to this historical city to see attractions such as this and make the most of car hire facilities.
The Peterskirche is the oldest church and is located close to Marienplatz. The Frauenkirche is the most famous building in the city centre and it also serves as the cathedral for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. Michaelskirche is the largest renaissance church in the region. Other churches are Burgersaalkirche, the Dreifaltigkeitskirche, the St. Anna Damenstiftskirche and and St. Anna im Lehel. Munich car hire is the best way to travel to these attractions in style and comfort.
